01 / The wind

Levante or Poniente? See what changes.

You will hear these two names a lot in Tarifa. The Levante blows from the east, the Poniente from the west. Pick a wind on the map and explore the places covered in this guide.

Poniente — the west wind

It comes in off the Atlantic and usually brings cooler air. It is often steadier than the Levante, but that does not mean flat water — waves and shorebreak can be waiting on the beach.

Levante — the east wind

It can be strong and gusty. At Los Lances it often blows out towards the open sea, so smooth water near the shore does not mean easy conditions.

LEVANTE

Los Lances

Beginners with an instructor

Levante usually blows offshore or at an angle out towards the ocean. The water by the beach can look flat, but the squalls and the offshore drift demand attention. Lessons require the right conditions, a designated teaching zone and confirmed rescue cover.

LEVANTE

Valdevaqueros

Independent riders

Levante can be strong and squally, with more swell both at the shore and further out. The wind angle changes along the bay, so the launch has to be chosen carefully. A crowded, sometimes narrow launch and a shifting direction call for confident kite control.

LEVANTE

Arte Vida

Independent riders

Levante arrives here offshore in strong pulses, with flat water by the beach and gusts funnelled between the buildings and the dunes. The beach narrows towards Valdevaqueros and there are rocks at the northern end, so choose your launch spot and your moment well.

LEVANTE

Balneario

Advanced / pro riders

A technical, exposed Levante spot: offshore wind, strong squalls and flatter water close to the beach. Rocks, little room to ride and the drift out to sea make this a place for advanced riders only, not for learning.

LEVANTE

Palmones

Beginners with an instructor

When Levante is strong in Tarifa, Palmones can offer lighter wind and flatter water, or light chop, in the Bay of Gibraltar. Watch out for the boats and for the entrance to the river channel.

LEVANTE

Getares

Beginners with an instructor

Getares lies in the lee of Gibraltar, on the other side of the Bay of Gibraltar, so a strong Levante in Tarifa usually arrives here weaker, while the more onshore wind builds waves that are ideal for wave riding.

LEVANTE

Caños de Meca

Independent riders

Levante can blow along the shore or at an angle to the beach, depending on the spot and the exact direction. In the right conditions waves appear, but you have to watch for rocks and stones. Experience and a check of the tides and the swell are needed.

PONIENTE

Los Lances

Beginners with an instructor

Poniente usually blows onshore or side-onshore here, bringing chop and sometimes waves and shorebreak. It is a common choice for lessons when the wind and the state of the sea match the student’s level. Use the permitted teaching and swimming zones.

PONIENTE

Valdevaqueros

Independent riders

Poniente brings waves here and ideal conditions for wave riding. The strength differs from one part of the bay to another and can be lighter than expected — that is the effect of the small cove the wind passes next to.

Explore this place

PONIENTE

Arte Vida

Independent riders

Poniente comes into Arte Vida off the ocean, with a wave at the shore over a steeper approach and only a narrow strip of sand to rig on at high tide. The short, steep waves come from the stony bottom, which is worth keeping in mind.

PONIENTE

Campo de Fútbol

Beginners with an instructor

The beach by the football pitch in Tarifa takes Poniente onshore or at an angle to the shore, often with chop and shorebreak. The wide, sandy beach and the regular swell make it one of our places for first lessons with an instructor. Check the seasonal swimming areas and the launch restrictions.

PONIENTE

Sancti Petri

Independent riders

A westerly Poniente can work on the ocean-facing beaches near Sancti Petri, and when the ocean is very rough, the entrance to the Sancti Petri channel offers flat and friendlier conditions. The tidal currents at the channels and the river mouth matter. Ride only in the permitted zones, knowing the local conditions, and stay clear of the waterways.

02 / Beaches & around

Get to know the Tarifa coast.

Los Lances, Valdevaqueros and the smaller places in between — see how they differ. You will find beaches to ride, spots worth a day trip, and places further afield worth knowing about before you travel.

Los Lances

Los Lances

Beginners with an instructor

One of Tarifa’s main kitesurfing beaches. It is worth telling its northern part from the stretch by the town — different beach-use rules apply to each. Where a lesson takes place is chosen around the conditions and the teaching zones that are open.

★ We teach hereWe teach here, choosing the session and launch area to suit the conditions.

Valdevaqueros

Valdevaqueros

Independent riders

One of the best-known kitesurfing spots in the area. It gets busy in season, so space to launch and traffic on the water matter as much as anything else when you pick your spot.

Arte Vida

Arte Vida

Independent riders

The stretch of coast known as Arte Vida. Before a session it is worth judging not just the wind and the waves but also how much room there is on the beach; there can be stones, so take care — especially at lower water.

Los Lances, Tarifa

Campo de Fútbol — Los Lances by the town

Beginners with an instructor

The stretch of beach by the football pitch, close to the centre of Tarifa. Whether you can ride depends partly on seasonal restrictions, so it is not a year-round lesson spot.

★ We teach hereWe teach here, choosing the session and launch area to suit the conditions.

Balneario

Balneario

Advanced / pro riders

A spot for experienced kitesurfers. In a Levante the wind blows offshore, and rocks and currents make it harder still. This is not a place for your first attempts with a kite.

Palmones

Palmones

Beginners with an instructor

One of the places considered when the Levante is strong in Tarifa. Base the decision to drive over on the local forecast and on whether a riding zone is available.

Getares

Getares

Beginners with an instructor

A beach near Algeciras, worth considering when the Levante is strong. Conditions can include waves, though — do not assume it will be flat and easy here.

Caños de Meca

Caños de Meca

Independent riders

A spot further afield, worth getting to know if you are also after wave riding. Before a session you need to be clear on the particular launch, the obstacles and the conditions.

Sancti Petri

Sancti Petri

Independent riders

An area for a longer trip out of Tarifa. Conditions vary with the beach and stretch of water you pick, so settle on a specific launch before your session.

These descriptions help you get to know the area. Before you ride, check the current forecast, the beach signage and which zones are open.

03 / Your trip

Plan your trip to Tarifa.

Can I start from scratch?

Yes — you do not need any previous experience. Your first session is with an instructor, and how it goes depends on your level and on the day’s conditions.

When should I come?

Pick your dates around what you are after: learning, stacking up sessions, or quiet days by the sea. No month guarantees a particular wind, though.

What should I check before a session?

Wind strength and direction, gusts, waves, tides and the rules that apply on the beach you have chosen. If you do not know the spot, ask for local advice.

What is there to do off the water?

Walk through the old town, take a stroll along the coast, or simply rest on the beach.
